When visiting the tasting room, the world of tea is at your fingertips.

We are here to teach you as much as we can about tea. The purpose of the tasting room is to try teas which will not only broaden your understanding of the tea world but encourage you to purchase some tea for your own consumption.

Walking into the tasting room, we welcome you to taste our "Teas on Tap." These teas we've chosen to highlight will expand your tea knowledge, as well as allow you to experience teas that you may not have otherwise tried.

Two of our "Teas on Tap" compare the similarities and/or differences between types of teas. (For example, Chinese vs. Japanese green teas or inherently peachy oolongs vs. peach flavored teas.) The other "Teas on Tap" include caffeinated and caffeine-free teas, that are separate from the comparison teas. These teas may be chosen on a whim, or just a tea we want to highlight for that day.

In addition to our "Teas on Tap" we also welcome customers to taste one tea of their choice. This allows you a taste of that special tea you've been wanting to try. Our tea consultants are available to help you decide what that tea is based on your palate and needs.

In the tasting room, we sell almost all of our teas loose at a beginning purchase point of 2 ounces. If you are interested in buying larger amounts, we can cater to that as well. We also welcome you to bring in your empty tea tins to be refilled at a discount. Because of the specialty nature of some teas, we cannot offer this for every tea we carry, but for the basics it's a good way to save money and reduce waste.

Hello tea people!

Thank you all for making 2011 such a wonderful year. We had great fun with great tea masters including TsuYoshi Sugimoto, James Norwood Pratt, and of course our resident tea men John and Michael Harney.

We drank a lot of great tea last year too! We saw Wild Wuyi Black, the earthy and meaty Chinese black tea, come and go. We had our first taste at an Indonesian black tea and a Darjeeling oolong tea. We are still keeping an eye on the effects of the unfortunate events in Japan, and are doing our best to help their economy by buying (and drinking!) delicious Japanese green tea.

This weekend we are enjoying some Lapsang Souchong in honor of Sherlock Holmes' 158th birthday. (It was his favorite tea.)

Hello shoppers!

The Millerton store will be open late this Monday - Friday until 6pm so you can get your last minute holiday shopping done.

On Saturday, Christmas Eve, the Store will open at 10am, Lunch Service starts at 11am and the whole shebang will close at 3pm. (So all of our lovely Tea Tenders can travel home to visit their families.)

We will be CLOSED on Sunday, Christmas Day. We will reopen at 10am Monday and resume our usual winter hours.

We will also be CLOSED on Sunday, New Years Day.

Holiday Herbal is a blend of caffeine-free rooibos and the holiday flavors of citrus, almond and spices. A warm cup of this delightfully flavored tisaneis perfect for chilly winter nights.

Chocolate Mint is one of Harney and Sons most popular flavored teas, black tea flavored with chocolate and peppermint leaves.

James Norwood Pratt was one of the seminal people in the Tea Revolution back in the 1980s. Another one was our founder John Harney. So we are mixing these two gents together and expect great results.

John Harney will join James Norwood Pratt in the tasting room in

Millerton, NY to drink and discuss the world of tea. Since a they are both authors, they will be signing books as well.

James Norwood Pratt's Tea Dictionary is a wealth of information about all principal types of tea grown in the world, with a timeline of tea history and maps of tea-growing areas.

We just got local preserves and honey in from Two Arrows Farm Orchard.

The preserves are Red Raspberry, Red Blush Peach, Concord Grape and Strawberry. We also have local wildflower honey either raw or filtered.

This weekend we are presenting the following flight:

Palm Court is a hearty blend of four teas (Keemun, Assam, Oolong, and Ceylon). Aptly named, this delicious tea was created to be served at New York City's Plaza Hotel.

Lapsang Souchong is an ancient and much loved tea from China. Large leaves are dried over smoky pine fires, giving the brew a deep and distinctive flavor.

Russian Country is a smooth blend of Palm Court and Lapsang Souchong teas. This is a softer version of the very smoky Lapsang Souchong. This tea is reminiscent of those that were carried by camel across the Asian deserts to Russia.

This weekend we are presenting a flight of black teas from China's Fujian Province.

The differences between theses teas come mostly from the part of the plant that is picked, as they are all from the same region.

Panyang Congou is picked later in the year when there is a larger leaf but less bud.

Panyang Golden Needle is picked in the late spring and has a medium leaf and bud.

Top Chingwo Congou is the earliest picking with the smallest tender leaf and most bud.

This weekend we will be presenting a flight of spiced teas. As summer draws to a close, come in and sample our spiced teas which will surely become a pleasant addition to the upcoming fall season.

Indian Spice is a delightful blend of Assam black tea, ground cardamom and warm spices. Enjoy with milk and sugar for the perfect chai blend.

Green Hot Cinnamon is a unique twist on our most popular flavored tea, Hot Cinnamon Spice. Chinese green tea is blended with three types of cinnamon and sweet clove, producing a more subdued body but familiar spicy kick.

This weekend we are presenting the following teas:

Sencha Scent of Mountains, a staff favorite, comes from a village named Kawane. Being one of the highest tea growing spots in Japan, the temperature is cooler and the air is foggier. Thus being so, the tea grows slower, allowing a delicious vegetal aroma and taste.

The leaves of Da Hong Pao are large in size and can be re-brewed several times. Reigning from the Wuyi mountains of the Fujian province, it possesses a warm and toasty flavor along with cooked fruit notes.

Namring First Flush 2011, with its light body and aromas of citrus and fruits, is a simply delightful tea. This Darjeeling is picked in the early spring, the first picking season of the year (that's a first flush!) Once tasting, you will appreciate the lightness and the sweetness this quality tea delivers.

This weekend we are presenting the following flight of teas:

Jasmine Globes is from the northern Fujian city of Fuan, the capital of jasmine teas in China. Big leaves and buds are plucked and formed into a large ball. Later jasmine flowers are mixed in. While light in body, this tea has wonderful floral flavor.

Okayti 2010 1st Flush Darjeeling is a truly delicious tea. The steeped leaves emit a bronze-hued brew with flavors of toasted almond and dried apricot.

Panyang Golden Tips tea is made from 100% golden tips. This tea comes from Panyang, in Northern Fujian. The brew's sweetness is more subtle than in previous years and has medium body.

This weekend we are presenting the following flight of teas:

Taiping Houkui is a special tea made in the Yellow Mountains of Anhui Province, using a unique process that stretches the big leaves out. The dried leaves look very different than other tea leaves. They are big straight leaves with a vivid green color. Taiping is full of theanine (an amino acid), so it has more body than other green teas. Also the vegetal flavor is more intense than other green teas.

Making a trip to the hometown of this tea is a highlight of any trip to Taiwan. PingLing is truly a tea town with tea restaurants, a tea museum, statues to the hardworking pluckers, even streetlights that resemble teapots. Also it is set a beautiful nature preserve that is loaded with Gardenia flowers. When we buy a Wenshan Baozhong, we look for something that reminds of Gardenias: lovely, lilting floral notes in the aroma and good body.

Top Chingwo Congou is a stellar black tea from northern Fujian Province. Chingwo is a neighboring town of Panyang, and makes a similar tea. This one has a great body and a lovely, slightly fruity, flavor.

This weekend we will be presenting a flight of jasmine flavored teas. The delicate floral notes in these teas are perfect for the summer season!

Black Jasmine is a new blend of Fujian black tea and fragrant jasmine flowers.

Jasmine is a delicate blend of Pouchong tea, slightly browner than a green tea, and jasmine flowers.

Dragon Pearl Jasmine comes from Fuan, China and is made by artfully hand-rolling pearls that have been gently infused with jasmine flowers.

Flight of Summer Arrivals! July 9th and 10th

This weekend stop by to sample the flight of some of our new summer arrivals!

Wuyi Cassia, Wild Wuyi, and Dooteriah.

Wuyi Cassia, a cliff tea (Yancha) oolong grows in the Wu Yi mountains in northern Fujian province. Cassia translates to cinnamon, but don't be fooled by the name! With the oolong's tight stripe shape and black bloom color, the brewed tea, itself a bright orange color, and has toasty, complex flavors.

In the Wu Yi mountains, Wild Wuyi is planted at 1600 meters above sea level. This black tea, with its mellow aroma and fresh taste, faces climates of clouds and fogs throughout the whole year. Brewing a beautiful bright red, Wild Wuyi will become your new favorite black tea.

After summer showers in the mountain regions of Darjeeling, the weather cools while tea plants begin to flush again. Dooteriah, a classic Autumnal tea, comes from the East Valley region Dooteriah garden. Tasting light with notes of stone fruit, this classic third flush is a fabulous addition to our Darjeelings.

Mango Fruit Tea is a delightfully, juicy blend of fruit pieces and mango flavors. This tisane yields a beautiful ruby red drink that is loaded with mango flavor, but no caffeine.

Passion Fruit tea is a refreshing and fruity, flavored black tea. Try this tea hot or iced!

Tropical Green tea combines hand-blended green teas from India with marvelous tropical flavor. Pineapple is the stand out flavor, and that's why we love it. Discover this fresh twist on traditional greens.

Flight of Teas! June 18th and 19th!

This weekend we are presenting a flight of our newest, 2011, Chinese green teas.

Meijiawu Lung Ching was made at the end of March just before the Ching Ming festival when the leaves are small and succulent. Lung Ching is one of China's most famous green teas, and is dried in the traditional fashion, using a hot wok. This tea is light and slightly sweet, with a bit of a roasted nut flavor.

Anji Baicha is a fabulous tea from northern Zhejiang Province. This is a green tea loaded with asparagus and citrus flavors. "Baicha" refers to the special cultivar (tea plant) used to make this tea. The first few leaves are lighter (or whiter) than normal. There is less green chlorophyll in the immature leaves.

Jin Shan is a lovely green tea made high on a mountain in Northern Zhejiang Province. Mike loves this tea, as it is a mixture of green and white leaves beautifully twisted. Since it is only finished in a wok, the lovely vegetal flavors are front and center. Also, as an early season tea, there is a good mouthfeel and a nice sweetness.

This weekend we are sharing all of our new Darjeeling teas with everyone.

Namring Upper 1st Flush 2011 This is from the upper part of this huge tea estate. It is a great First Flush Darjeeling from a banner year. A true delight, this tea is light in body, incredibly flavorful and very fragrant. Let the freshness of the aromas transport you to the lovely mountains of Darjeeling.

Singbulli Darjeeling Dj 41 Although we were close to Singbulli during our recent trip to Darjeeling, we did not visit Singbulli. It is located in the very scenic Mirik Valley which has many tea estates. Its name means Home of the birds- which is appropriate because of the steep mountain that makes up this estate. This particular First Flush is a very nice one, and a bit more mellow than our Namring First Flush and the tropical fruit aromas are a bit darker.

Dooteriah Autumnal Darjeeling After the summer rains in the moutains around Darjeeling, the sun comes out and the weather cools, and tea plants start to flush again. This tea from the Dooteriah Garden in the East Valley region is a classic Autumnal tea. The tea is light in body with hints of stone fruit.

This weekend we are presenting "Eddie's Picks" flight. Our employee, Eddie, has chosen his favorite teas to share with all of you.

Wenshan Baozhong is a greatly aromatic, Taiwanese oolong tea. The dark green leaves are lighly coiled and yield a medium bodied, and buttery tea.

Soba is roasted buckwheat and is caffeine free. Its toasty flavor is a delight.

Verveine, also known as lemon verbena, has big green leaves that produce an unusually full-bodied, herbal yellow tisane with a wonderful aroma.

Black Currant was John Harney's first flavored tea. This black tea has refreshing fruity flavor that has become a lasting favorite.

This weekend everyone is thinking about spring. All of the trees are in bloom and spreading a light yellow dusting of pollen on everything. The annual Trade Secrets garden show and sale event is happening just across the border in Sharon, CT. We will be raffling off a hand-painted Chinese porcelain tea cup set that is inspired by James van Sweden's garden and landscape work.

We are also very excited that our new spring teas are starting to come in from China and India. We have the same flight in both stores, so visit the Harney SoHo blog for beautiful pictures and descriptions of the teas.

Flight of Teas! May 14th and 15th!

As a glimpse into what new teas the Harneys picked up while on they're sourcing trip in China and India, this weekend. we will be offering a flight of three brand new teas!

Snow Dragon 2011 Like the first flowers poking up through the snow in New England, this was the first tea of the new season. Snow Dragon Tea is light and sweet and quite pleasing to the eye as well. Its downy white tips and light green leaves give this tea wonderful balance of white tea sweetness and body worthy of a delightful green.

Bi Lo Chun 2011 is a frizzy white and green tea curl made by hand on Dongting Island in Jiansu Province. It is light in body and has wonderful light floral aromas, possibly from the surrounding orange trees.

Namring Upper 1st Flush 2011 This is from the upper part of this huge tea estate. It is a great First Flush Darjeeling from a banner year. A true delight, this tea is light in body, incredibly flavorful and very fragrant. Let the freshness of the aromas transport you to the lovely mountains of Darjeeling.

This weekend we are presenting a "Spring into Green Tea" flight. Come in and toast Spring with these delicious, Chinese green teas.

Huang Shan Mao Feng is an early season tea from the Anhui Province's Yellow Mountains and is full of freshness and flavor. This tea is shaped in a wok, creating slight toasty flavors.

Chun Lu has more body than most green teas. In fact, it has an almost creamy texture with a vegetal aroma, tending toward asparagus. This delightful tea is rarely seen outside of China.

Bi Lo Chun has frizzy white and green curls that are made by hand on Dongting Island in the Jiansu Province. It is light in body and has wonderful light floral aromas, possibly from the surrounding orange trees.

This weekend we are presenting "Alex's Picks" flight. Our cafe manager, Alex Harney, has chosen his favorite teas to share with all of you!

Fenghuang Shuixian is a Chinese oolong tea with large, twisted brown leaves. When brewed, the tea has a light roasted spice quality and lovely bright peach flavors which overlay a pleasing, spicy astringency.

Dong Ding Light is a light, buttery and floral oolong. Alex fell in love with this tea when he visited Taiwan and it continues to be one of his favorites.

Yanagi is a Japanese green tea that forms as a result of the processing of sencha. Yanagi means "willow" in Japanese, as the tea leaves become flat and folded look like those of a willow tree. The full, but light, flavor is a nice alternative to the strong, vegetal taste of sencha.

Ali San is a Taiwanese oolong tea that is treasured for its creamy texture and citrus notes.

Li Shan is also a Taiwanese oolong tea, grown high in the mountains. The climate produces a tea with notes of honey and cream.

Osmanthus Oolong is a hand-rolled Chinese tea, blended with Osmanthus flowers. The brew has aromas of cooked fruit.

This weekend we are sharing Sarah's Favorite Teas with the tea drinkers of Millerton.

"I absolutely love deep, leafy vegetables like spinach, kale and broccoli rabe. Scent of Mountians Sencha is reminiscent of those flavors, though sweeter and with a smooth finish."

"Keemun Mao Feng is my 'default tea'. It is bold, but not too strong, and has a lovely chocolatey taste. It puts a smile on my face every time I make it."

2003 Fuhi Sheng Puerh Cake - "I find puerh fascinating. The Chinese take the large, older leaves that are too bitter to drink fresh, press them into a disc and let them age and ferment over time. This process breaks down the leaves and creates a smooth and earthy drink. This particular puerh is relatively young and bright, but the earthy mellowness is already detectable."

This weekend we are presenting Russel's "Shan xian Shan" flight of Chinese teas.

Jin Shan is a Chinese green tea that has curly, white and green leaves that brew to a lovely pale liquor. This tea has subtly sweet, toasty and citrus flavors. "I am always entranced by the ethereal sweetness found in this tea."
Fenghuang Shuixian is a beautiful, twisted oolong that is bursting with flavor. A bright peach flavor overlays a pleasing, spicy astringency. The flavors in this tea are very active, seeming almost effervescent at times. "When I taste this tea, I enjoy the development of the flavor from brilliant peach to subtle spice."Wuyi Shan Lapsang is a black tea that is smoked over pine wood, making for a distinct flavor. Unlike the supremely smoky Lapsang Souchong, this tea exhibits a distinct sweetness. "The rich flavors of sweet and smoke combine to form an exquisitely smooth and balanced cup of tea. This tea might be my favorite."

Angiogenesis Blend is made with hand-picked and hand-rolled Chinese and Japanese green teas. This blend has a delightful, soft flavor with subtle floral essence. Danielle likes this tea for the health benefits and it gives her "a refreshing outlook on life".

Moroccan Mint is a blend of Gunpowder green tea and aromatic peppermint leaves. Danielle suggests this tea for people who cannot overcome the flavor of traditional green teas.

Yerba Mate is a popular herbal beverage from South America, yielding a grassy, vegetal brew. Danielle enjoys this "tea" because it is a "balanced stimulant that is full of antioxidants".

This weekend we are presenting "Brigitte's Picks" flight. Our store manager and Michael Harney's wife, Brigitte, has chosen her favorite teas to share with all of you!

Soba "tea" is made from roasted buckweat and is naturally caffeine free. Brigitte first discovered this tea many years ago in New York City at Takashimaya tea shop. The pleasant, toasty flavors remind her of coffee and evokes warm feelings.

Java Golden Blend is a new tea for Harney and Sons. This Indonesian tea has beautiful small leaves with lots of golden tips. The brew is round and reminds her of a good Assam tea.

While on a trip to China with Michael, Brigitte first came across Anji Baicha. She loves the almost yellow hue of the unbrewed leaves. Astonishingly, once brewed, one can clearly see the bud and two leaves - a truly beautiful and delicious green tea.

This weekend we are presenting "Caitlin's Picks" flight. Our employee, Caitlin, has chosen her favorite black, oolong and green teas to share with all of you!

Hao Ya "A" is a most intense Keemun tea, exhibiting light chocolate and toasty flavors. Caitlin explains, "This tea saved me this winter. I love the slight smokiness but smooth body."

Ali San is a uniquely delicious Taiwanese oolong tea. The floral notes and creaminess make for a delightful brew. "I have a rapacious sweet tooth that can only be quelled by multiple steepings of Ali San....and a giant piece of cake."

Match Iri Genmaicha is a mixture of powdered Matcha and Genmaicha green teas. The toasty notes of the Genmaicha pair perfectly with the smoothness of Matcha, yielding an intensely green liquor. "This tea is amazing! It's like Rice Krispies for adults!"

Natural sweetness comes from the tips in a tea, and this one has a lot! Indulge your taste buds with honey flavors while tasting our Assam Golden Tips.
Yunnan Golden Tips is a mixture of the dull gold buds and black tea leaves from China's Yunnan Province. The aroma is a sweet and earthy combination typical of many Yunnans.

Elyse's Blend is a delicious tea named for the two Elyses in the Harney family. Tippy Assam and Kenyan teas are blended with smooth Kenilworth Ceylon, then slightly sweetened with honey flavors.

This weekend we are presenting a spring themed flight of teas. It's been a long winter and we are hoping this provides some divine inspiration.

Chun Lu is a dark, Chinese green tea that has more body than most green teas. Grown in a remote village in the Thousand Islands lake region of Zhejiang Province, this tea has an almost creamy texture with vegetal aromas, tending toward asparagus. Fenghuang Green is a less oxidized, greener, Oolong tea from Fenghuang in China. The long twisted leaved produce a brew that has a floral aroma and is light in body.
Risheehat 1st Flush Darjeeling is surprisingly pale in liquor with green leaves. The brew is light and perfectly brisk, with aromas of tropical fruit.

This weekend we are presenting a flight of Chinese black teas. In near central China, our journey begins with the Hunan Province, where we found our Hunan Black Buds a deliciously light and sweet tea. Traveling East, the Fujian Province is where our medium bodied Panyang Congou is harvested. Heading Norht to the Anhui Province, we find Hao Ya "A", a strong and chocolatey Keemun tea.

Hunan Black Buds is a relatively new find for Harney & Sons. The leaves are light and fuzzy with a plethora of buds blended in. This tea is light in body with toasty caramel notes.

Panyang Congou is a darker and more smokey tea, exhibiting less sweetness and more body than the Hunan Black Buds. The brew yields notes more reminiscent of toasted apples.

Hao Ya "A" is a Keemun tea, Keemuns being some of China's oldest and most renowned black teas. This tea is harvested in the spring when the leaves are bigger and more flavorful, allowing the tea to have dark, chocolatey notes and an intense, roasted aroma.

This weekend we are presenting a flight of intriguing, single-estate black teas.

Kenilworth OP is a delicious Ceylon tea from the Kenilworth Garden north of the Dimbula area. This tea has large leaves and full oxidation, yielding a smooth liquor.
Nahorabi is a full-leaf Assam black tea. This tea has lovely toasted malt and cooked honey aromas, it is also lighter in body than broken-leaf Assam teas.

Namring is a delightful second flush Darjeeling tea. This Darjeeling is lighter in body than the Risheehat, yet has the nice Muscatel (dark fruit) flavor.

Russian Country is reminiscent of the teas that were carried by camel from the deserts of Asia to Russia. We blend our Palm Court (Keemun, Assam, Oolong and Ceylon teas) with a touch of smoky Lapsang Souchong. This black tea makes for a delicious accompaniment to savory winter dishes.

Huang Shan Mao Feng is an early season green tea from the China's Anhui Province. The tea leaves are shaped in a wok, producing toasty flavors.

This weekend we are presenting a flight of Earl Grey teas. Our master tea blenders have created three special variations of the classic, Bergamot flavored, black tea. These unique and inviting brews are the perfect way to warm up this weekend!

Earl Grey Supreme is the perfect tea for those who consider themselves connoisseurs. Using a higher grade of tea, as well as the addition of Ceylon Silver Tips, this tea is a delicious departure from the standard Earl Grey.

Viennese Earl Grey adds Darjeeling to the base tea before the Bergamot is added. Michael Harney was first introduced to this delightful variation of Earl Grey tea while visiting friends in Vienna, prompting the intriguing name.

Winter White Earl Grey is a blend of delicate Mutan White tea and lemony Bergamot. While decidedly more mellow than the aforementioned blends, this tea is quite pleasing and evocative.

Tencha is a very special Japanese tea, as it is the base for powdered Matcha. The color is dark green and the flakes of tea are quite unique. The brew has a soft, spinach flavor with rounded sweetness.

Taiping Houkui s a famous Chinese green tea from the Yellow Mountains of the Anhui Province. The leaves are large and yield an intense vegetal flavor, with more body than other green teas. New! Kenya Milima is one of Africa's finest black teas. The leaves are big and loaded with golden tips, reminiscent of Assam teas, yielding a mellow brew that is light in body. NEW! Livingstonia GFOP is a Tanzanian black tea names for the explorer David Livingstone. This is a full leaf tea that is reminiscent of a high-grown Ceylon. The brew is light and lively.

Organic Rooibos is a delicious, caffeine free, herbal tea. Rooibos is from South Africa and translates to mean "red bush".

This weekend we are presenting a flight of Oolong teas. Oolong tea is between green tea and black tea. Partially oxidized these teas offer a variety of colors with complex flavors.

Da Hong Pao is an oolong grown in China's Wuyi Mountains. The large leaves can be rebrewed several times and yield a warm toasty flavor with hints of stone fruit.Wuyi Yancha is a twisted and dark Oolong tea. The complex brew has cooked fruit flavors and floral aromas.
New! Rou Gui is a medium oxidized Oolong tea. The leaves yield dark, rich fruit flavors, perfect for a chilly fall day. Come in and try our newest find!

This weekend we are presenting a flight of Darjeeling teas. Darjeeling, located high in the mountains, makes great black teas. The First Flush Darjeelings, made in the Spring, are known for the brisk tastes and light tropical fruit flavors. Later in the year, the Second Flush Darjeelings are darker and more lush with muscatel flavors.

Risheehat 1st Flush Darjeeling is one of our 2010 teas; an excellent tea in a bad year. This Darjeeling is light but perfectly brisk with aromas of tropical fruit.
Risheehat 2nd Flush Darjeeling is a full bodied yet balanced tea. Interestingly, this tea is from “China” tea bushes, meaning the plant stock is descended from Chinese bushes taken to India over 100 years ago.
Pussimbing Autumnal Darjeeling is some of the last tea made before the Pussimbing estate closes for the winter. The dark liquor is light in body and has a haunting fruity and spicy aroma.

Nahorabi Full Leaf Assam has a slightly lighter body than the Mangalam with toasted malt and cooked honey notes.

Mangalam Broken Assam is a vibrant broken leaf tea. Perfect for mornings, this tea has both briskness and body.

It looks like the weather is going to hold out this year. It is a beautiful fall day in Millerton, just perfect for wandering the town and seeing equally beautiful artwork. The entire village will be in party mode from 5pm - 8pm tonight with food, drink and music. This year's raffle prizes look great, and there's a game involved in winning them. Join us for some fun!

We at Harney & Sons are lucky enough to have TWO artists represented in our store in Railroad Plaza in Millerton, NY.

Wendy Hollender is being showcased in the tasting room. She does botanical art in a few different mediums from colored pencil to oil. She will also be in the store doing a book signing for her book Botanical Drawing in Color.

Sandra Boynton has artwork hanging in the tea lounge from her upcoming book Amazing Cows: Udder Absurdity for Children.

In the spirit of Millerton's "Fall for Art," we will be featuring a flight of fall inspired teas.

Apple Cinnamon, a flavored black tea, was created by John Harney's grandson, Emeric. It's the time of year for apple pie and apple crisp, and this tea inspires the same flavors.

Cranberry Autumn is a black tea flavored with dried cranberry and orange peel. This tea yields a sweet cup with tart red fruit and citrus notes.

Spiced Plum is a flavored herbal teas, pairing the sweet tartness of plum with the warmth and spice of cinnamon. This herbal is heartier than most and makes for a distinct cup.

This weekend we are featuring three flavored black teas. With temperatures dropping and winds whipping, come in and sample our delicious teas. They are sure to warm you up!

Cranberry Autumn is a black tea flavored with cranberry and orange. The blend of citrus and red fruit is bright and sweet.

Chocolate mint is a black tea flavored with chocolate and peppermint. The warm notes of this tea are the perfect accompaniment to an after dinner treat.

Hot Cinnamon Spice, our best selling tea, is a black tea flavored with cinnamon and sweet clove. Taste this robust and naturally sweet brew and you'll be sure to know why it is one of our most popular teas.

We just have to show these off...they're too cute!

We worked with gleena to customize these little guys to have each letter of the alphabet represent a type of tea. A is for Assam, B is for Bi Lo Chun, C is for Chamomile....and so on.

Welcome Dutchess Putnam Westchester Sogetsu Study Group!

Harney and Sons The Store is pleased to announce the Dutchess Putman Westchester Sogetsu Study Group’s Annual Japanese Ikebana Flower show, “Welcome Autumn.”

The Ikebana floral arrangements will be displayed in the store this weekend: Saturday, October 9^th, 2010 from 10 AM to 5 PM and Sunday, October 10^th, 2010 from 11 AM to 4 PM.

An Artists’ Reception will be held on Saturday from 4PM to 6PM.

In the spirit of this weekend's Ikebana flower show, "Welcome Autumn," we will be featuring three different Japanese teas.

Kukicha is an unique green tea, as it is composed of the usually discarded stalks of the tea plant. Slightly lower in caffeine than most green teas, Kukicha yields a light and nutty, slightly vegetal brew with a green color.
Sencha Scent of Mountains is grown in the village of Kawane. The cold and foggy climate dictates that the tea grow slowly, giving it a lovely vegetal aroma. One of our staff favorites, the leaves can be brewed multiple times.

Matcha iri Genmaicha is a blend of powdered green Matcha, and our Genmaicha. The Genmaicha has a pleasant roasted flavor, as rice kernels are added to the tea as the leaves are dried. The addition of Matcha to this blend, gives the tea a brilliant green color.

For this coming weekend we will be featuring three different breakfast teas. These strong black teas are delicious alone or with milk and sugar.

Our English Breakfast blend is the traditional blend of 100% Chinese Keemun teas. Bold yet smooth, this tea offers a gentle start to the day.

If you prefer to take your tea with milk and sugar, our Irish Breakfast blend of 100% Assam tea is a perfect choice. With fall quickly approaching, this strong and malty tea is sure to offer warmth and comfort.

We created this blend to be Malachi McCormick's Decent Tea as described in his book sharing the same title. This blend of Assam and Keemun teas combines the qualities of both of the aforementioned teas. "...you'll end up with a definitive Decent Cup of Tea, and may hold your head up in public again. Or for the very first time."

ETA: Malachi McCormick's blend seemed to be the favorite of the weekend, being smooth and enjoyable to span all types of tea drinkers; from people who usually drink flavored tea, to people who usually add milk and sugar, this tea was a hit!

This weekend we are going to be tasting some Chinese Black Teas. In contrast to the Ceylons last week, these are much smoother with a hint of honey.
Hunan Black Buds, Golden Monkey, and Yunnan Golden Tips are good any time of day in the cool weather ahead of us.

For this coming weekend we will present three Ceylon black teas: New Vithanakande, Kenilworth, and Lover's Leap.

New Vithanakande has hints of unsweetened chocolate and honey sweetness, with a little lemony astringency. It's "round" and satisfying taste makes this a great tea for afternoon enjoyment.

Kenilworth has gentle roasted flavors, with hints of peach and clover honey in the finish. It has an especially smooth liquor.

Lover's Leap is a light Ceylon with hints of lemon in the flavor.

This weekend we are having a 50% OFF SALE here at the store.
Stop in for great deals on teaware, books and home accessories.

It's been so hot this week that we have been wanting to drink cold beverages.
So, in lieu of our usual tea flight we're going to be tasting iced tea this weekend.

Also, the store and cafe will be
CLOSED on Monday, September 6th for Labor Day.

Fall Hours will resume on September 7th.
Sunday the store will be open from 11am - 4pm
and we will be serving lunch from 12 noon - 3pm.

This weekend we are highlighting the honeyed sweetness of teas with golden tips (or in the case of the Assam, purely tips). Our flight this weekend is Assam Golden Tips, Golden Monkey and Yunnan Golden Tips. Sweet!

Flight of Teas! August 21th and 22nd!

For this coming weekend we will be presenting three teas with the underlying quality of toasty: Hojicha, Da Hong Pao and Wuyi Shan Lapsang.
Hojicha is a tea that is dried under intense heat which gives it its natural toasty flavors. A fan favorite here at Harney & Sons and not to mention, it is very lightly caffeinated as it is comprised of only the tea stalks.

Da Hong Pao is a highly oxidized oolong tea that gets highly fired as well. The Maillard reaction occurs once a tea gets dried at a certain temperature giving it nutty and toasty flavors.

Wuyi Shan Lapsang is a lightly smoked Chinese black tea that has the wonderful qualities of Lapsang, but not as assertive. The tea base itself is more rounded and much tastier for it doesn't rely solely on the smokiness that makes Lapsang such a hit.

Flight of Teas! August 14th and 15th!

For this upcoming weekend we will be presenting three teas with an underlying brothy theme: Taiping Houkui, Matsuda's Sencha and Genmaicha.

Genmaicha is a blend of a summer harvest green tea named bancha and roasted rice kernels. The rice kernels give it a nutty flavor along with a brothy body that we all typically enjoy.

Matsuda's Sencha comes from the Uji tea region of Japan. This farmer makes the tea from start to finish which makes this tea incredibly wholesome. This sencha has more amino acids and sugars than most which gives it a more luscious and brothy taste than most!

Taiping Houkui is a special spring harvest green tea from the Anhui province. This special tea is made from its own cultivar, bred for long leaves. With its naturally occurring amino acids, this tea has a delicious and natural brothy quality to it.
